Believing in God

By Pastor John Bingham

James 2:19, “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.”

The fastest growing religion today is “none.” Often they have been referred to as Atheists, a belief that there is no God. The original readers of the Epistle of James were not atheists. Because of their Jewish background and heritage, they believed that there was one God.

Even though our society belittles those that believe in God, the fact is that even creation testifies that there is a God. That is why God states in Psalms 14:1, “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.” How can you gaze upon a spectacular sunrise and proclaim it was an accident? How can one see a beautiful tulip blossoming in the spring and try to convince yourself it was an accident? We could look at the wonders of science, the universe, animal life, and human life and be astounded by the complexities and magnificence of each, and we would all have to agree that these testify to the truth that there is an original Creator.

Yet, believing that there is a God is not enough for salvation. James states that even the devils believe and tremble. Jesus Christ stated, “no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6b). The only way to enter heaven is through Jesus Christ. When you put your faith in Christ as your Saviour, you are saying, God I can’t get to heaven in any of my own ways, I trust in Your Way, and I will submit to your will. Do you believe in God? That’s great, but more importantly, to be saved, you must believe on Jesus Christ for salvation.

Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
