The Fairest of Them All

By Pastor John Bingham

James 1:23-24, “ For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.”

In 1937, Walt Disney produced one of the most popular movies of all time, Snow White. Snow White is a princess living with her vain stepmother, the Queen. Daily the Queen asks her mirror, “who is the fairest one of all?” For years, this mirror always answers that it is her, but one day, the mirror answers that Snow White is the fairest of them all. In her jealousy, she orders one of her huntsmen to take her out and slay her.

The Word of God is like a mirror. It shows us things in our life that maybe are not as fair as God would have them be. Perhaps, there is a sin of envy, pride, or bitterness that is revealed in your life as you read the Bible. James lays out the principle, that when the Lord reveals these things to you, then be willing to deal with the issue at hand. This is the same as a man who gets up each morning to prepare for his day by looking into a mirror and combing his hair. As we reflect on God’s Word this way, we will see God develop us into His image.
