Tongue Twister

By Pastor John Bingham

James 3:10-11, “Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.”

As a child, I remember different tongue twisters. We would try to say them as quick as we could. A twister used by some radio and television announcers before they perform is: "The seething sea ceaseth and thus the seething sea sufficeth us."

But a truly dangerous tongue twister is what James writes about here. A tongue that will bless God one moment, but curse the brethren the next. Benjamin Franklin stated, “A slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue you may never get over.”

The Bible says, “...if any man love God, the same is known of him” (1 Corinthians 8:3). The evidence is seen in the love we have for the brethren. 1 John 4:20 states, “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?” Lets put away the tongue twisters that destroy and choose to put on a mouth of blessing that is used to encourage the brethren and point lost souls to Christ.
